Mayday Mayday Amended Codes

Rob Davies minister of Trade and Industry “I cannot extend the deadline again. The revised codes will come into effect on May 1Financial Mail 16th April 2015

The B-BBEE industry has been on a knife edge over the last few months. While the industry to a large extent expected a delay to legislation that isn’t ready, officials at the DTI continued headstrong towards their own self imposed deadline. Even though a delay would be welcomed, it now seems quite unlikely given the political pressure placed on this important legislation.

It is now impossible for any QSE or sector code to be updated and followed in time for the May deadline. Rob Davies minister of Trade and Industry “The sector codes are a process and will be finalisedFinancial Mail 16th April 2015

Although we are naturally quite disappointed at the fact that the full Amended Codes are not ready, we are quite pleased that QSE and charter scorecards can still be issued after 1 May.

Next Steps

Since we are now quite sure the generic Amended Codes will be implemented from 1 May the hard work and preparation needs to begin early. EconoBEE is hosting three informative sessions to help businesses cope with the additional requirements of the Amended Codes;

  • Strategic Executive Overview of the Amended B-BBEE Codes. Intended only for high level senior executive responsible for BEE. This session will give an executive overview which will assist in the decision making process.
  • Supplier Day. As the need for black owned businesses increased, we quickly realised how difficult it would be to source alternative suppliers. This session, aimed at your future suppliers together with purchasing managers, will form the basis of the next generation of businesses in South Africa.
  • Half Day Workshops scheduled every week from 12th May 2015. During the session we cover the legislation, implementation suggestions and how to create a scorecard using the new Amended Codes

Strategic Executive Overview of the Amended B-BBEE Codes

Changes to the legislation will cause most businesses scores to drop substantially which will substantially limit their competitiveness in the market place. Alternative activities to earn points such as changing suppliers might require a radical directional change in business thinking and processes. Identifying points scoring activities while simultaneously eliminating weaknesses is essential to maintaining a satisfactory scorecard.

  • High risk elements
  • Significant differences and interpretations
  • Key performance indicators

Supplier Day

The procurement indicators in the Amended Codes allocate 9 points for black owned businesses, 4 points for black female owned business and 7 points for businesses with a turnover below R50 million per annum. Many larger businesses had done well on the procurement element in the past. However with the significant changes to the legislation their procurement score will drop substantially. This presents a major opportunity for alternative suppliers to begin supplying those business.

Our session is designed to help black owned suppliers understand the requirements while also connecting purchasing decision makers to our delegates. We will store company details and product and service offerings to enable businesses requiring alternative suppliers to source them from our database.

Topics Discussed:

  • Business Opportunities as a highly compliant supplier
  • Meeting quality and service expectations
  • Growth through Supplier Development
  • Investment potential
